*Global Film Exam part 2*

Being true to yourself means that you still act like your own self and do things that are natural to you and your culture. The protagonist I chose that I believed to be true to him was Master Li Mu Bai. He kept his traditional clothing on the whole movie. He kept his own monk hairstyle the same through the whole movie and his rules. He would never fight anyone with dishonor and always fought fair. He never fought to kill he did to create peace. Only once in the whole movie he didn’t kill for peace and that was to avenge his father.
He followed the ancient Chinese traditions very well. And over all he was a cool character. He kept calm through the whole movie even when he was near death. He was trying to keep the one he loved calm by keeping calm his own self.
Master Li Mu Bai was the perfect example of staying true to your self. Because he followed his traditions and culture very well. He never changed for anyone and stayed acting like himself throughout the whole movie.

*Global Film Final Exam*

I will write my essay on Lola from “Run, Lola, Run” because she has things about her that remind me of myself. She is independent and is willing to do so much for the one she loves. I am that way as well I will go to the ends of the earth for the ones I love, and I too am independent. She has a strange taste in things like me. We also are both not very organized people.
She was a cool character though she wasn’t like the average female she was really strong to the end. She went through drastic measures to help the one she loves and I respect that. I too would do drastic things to help the ones I love. She also didn’t have that good of a relationship with her family. I too am currently suffering from family problems so this is why I currently feel connected to Lola.
The culture of Germany is very interesting. They are strong, independent and intelligent people. All of those things were shown well within Lola. What I can say is the only differences between Lola and I is she is a lot more fit then me, she is a female and she is a lot braver then me.
Germany is definitely stricter then the United States. It seems like a very cool place to be. I heard that you can get a lot of well paying jobs in Germany and their Health Care system is a lot better then ours. They may have had a dark past but now they are a good society with a lot of awesome places to go. Also I like how idiocy is punished a bit more there then here, I think they over all have better rules and customs over there then here, but that is only my opinion so other people could be thinking different things.

{My Life In Pink}

Its about a middle class family of 6 living in a good neighborhood in Belgium. The protagonist of the story is a little 7 year old boy named Ludovic. He feels as if he is a female which means he is a transexual.

The boy gets caught in a dress when at his new friends house. which is when the trouble starts for the Fabre family. the whole neighborhood starts to hate them because of it. Even the mom goes crazy and starts to hate her own son.

I think this movie showed how a lot of people are very rude to those that are different. I believe that everyone should be treated equally. No matter what, in the end we are all just people, so we should all be treated like people.

{Triplets of Belleville}

This movie takes place in France. A Young Man is a bike enthusiast and gets kidnapped by strange henchman. It is his grandmas job with the assistance of his dog to go and rescue him

She meets triplet singers once they get older and they go on a mission to go save her grandson. The movie is in cartoon style and its also silent. They show the strangeness in the food French people eat.

I thought this movie was alright. The style was unique and disturbing at the same time. It reminded me a little bit of Russian cartooning but a bit more odd.

"Billy Elliot"

This movie takes place in England. Its about a boy in a poor family. His name is Billy Elliot. The family and a bunch of other people in the movie are are on a strike for workers rights.

Apparently when the movie begins we figure out Billy's mom is dead. And obviously this makes his dad a very unhappy person. He has a brother who has a tough guy attitude and can be pretty rude. He also lives with a grandma that has amnesia and acts pretty strange.

The movie was okay it shows how any gender should be able to do anything if they truly want to. Billy learned how to dance very well. He was very passionate about it. And he got to fulfill his dream of being a dancer through plenty of hardships.

{Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon}

This movie takes place in China. The theme is ancient china. It was a kung fu movie with beautiful scenery and movement.

They did a very nice job with the movement and scenery. The acting was also pretty good. I believe the characters they chose for the roles were perfect. Even the girl from James Bond played in this movie.

They had a lot of weapons from ancient Chinese fairy tales and they showed the ancient Chinese customs very well. I really enjoyed this movie and you will too. I have always been fascinated with ancient China and their fairy tales; this is by far the best movie we have watched in Global Film studies so far.

{Litle Miss Sunshine }

It is about a slightly dysfunctional family living in New Mexico. Their adventure start with them going to California for a Little Miss Sunshine girl contest. The daughter in the movie named Olive really wants to win one.

It is a dysfunctional family of 6 The Dad, Mom, Son, Daughter, Uncle, and Grandpa. The mom is always stressed and began to smoke. The dad is too optimistic and has a major ego, while the son has silenced himself for a year. The daughter has a big dream of winning a contest, the Grandpa is a cocaine addict and the uncle tried committing suicide because of his life falling apart.

They went on a road trip to California. They experience a lot of bad luck and a tragic loss. This movie is really funny but has sort of a good message in the end. Your struggles are what make you you don't try to hard to be like everyone else around you.

{The Kings Speech}

This movie takes place in England. It is about how George the sixth became king of England. This movie one awards for itself.

It was a good movie actually. I love the British and how formal they are. Apparently King George had a speech problem so he couldn't give speeches.So Lionel who became friends with George in the movie helped him out with voice training exercises.

This movie had really good ratings. Although the movie is a bit slow it is still a good movie over all. since it didn't have action in it I didn't love it, but for a movie of this genre is really good.

{Hoop Dreams} [FINAL]

The film is about two African American boys names William Gates, and Arthur Agee.
This documentary shows their passion for basketball and how they struggled getting through school with a good GPA. This took place in Westchester Illinois, which is said to not be a very safe city.

William suffered through knee injuries through out his life which made it very difficult for him to live up to his dream of being an NBA star. Arthur had major family problems because his dad was on drugs for a short period of time and got sent to jail, which probably had a big effect on Arthur. They were both born in a poor neighborhood and went to a school with a poor education, but then went to a better one later on. They had a hard life growing up and still managed to get by school with time and effort.

William Gates barley graduated but actually did and became a pastor. Arthur Agee who also struggled through school became a person who helps kids make the right choices in life and not fall into a bad situation. They both still play basketball for fun because they still have a passion for it. In the end they grew up and had a decent life.

{Persepolis}

A cartoon film about a woman's life as a child and up. It takes place in Iran. It was showing events in this woman's life, it may be dark at times but it can be quite humorous.

She was born in an Iran family where life was actually pretty good. her Uncle got imprisoned for life and died in jail. It shown how she grew from a young child to a grown woman in a very challenging life style. its a pretty good animation.

{Run Lola Run}

This movie is about a strong girl who is trying to help her boyfriend out. He gets himself in trouble when he loses the money needed for his special "job". It is up to Lola to run a very long way for him and help him out.

This movie obviously revolved around time and fate. It showed some of the civilian's fates as she ran past them. This movie takes place in Germany and was made very well.

I liked the movie and the equality between the genders. Lola is very tough and must of been really fit to run that long and far. Their are 3 different endings in the movie, it went through every single ending and repeated certain parts with different outcomes. This movie was pretty good I recommend others to watch it especially for people that want to see something unique.

{No one knows about persian cats}

Its a movie that takes place in Iran. It was filmed to show how strict the government in Iran is about music making. Its a very inspiring movie.

I actually like The Indie Rock they made. I actually understood what the songs were about and they were preformed pretty well. I actually thought the movie was quite decent. I honestly really disagree with the law about music I believe anyone should express their feelings with any kind of art or music.

Im going to have to say the movie may of been kind of slow and boring at times but the ending was quite sad. The music is whats worth it. Indie Rock is actually pretty cool.

{Tsotsi}

It is in Africa and it is about a homeless young man that shot a woman for her car not knowing there was her baby in the back. He felt bad about and took the baby. He kept it and took care of it feeling regret for what he has done.

The movie i felt was okay, sadly i wasn't quite paying attention. The actors did a decent job in the movie but mainly the lead role. I love how the movie had multiple endings in the end . It was okay.

{Chak de!}

This movie is about a man who was an ex member of a Indian field hockey team. He after being considered a traitor for quite some time he decided to host a woman's field hockey team. The hosts of the sports stuff thought it was a waste of time but were horribly wrong.

The movie showed how team work can make the perfect team. I loved how all the characters had their own personalities and had conflicts with each other. The sports is actually new to me I didn't know it was played competitively.

Over all I actually kind of liked the movie. I'm not normally into sport movies but i liked this one. I definitely recommend this movie if you like sports movies.

{The Host}

Th

e Host is a comedy horror. It takes place in Korea it is subtitled for the most part but actually has some English in it. Their are 5 main characters in this whole movie.

I really enjoyed the movie but found the ending quite sad. It was funny at times but still showed the elements of a horror very well. I felt fear for the characters in the story when face to face with the giant beast.

The main characters daughter was being held captive by the monster and the beast itself didn't even know she was alive till later on. I found the ending quite epic on how they killed the beast I give the movie a 9/10

{Afghan Star}

      This is a movie that takes place in Afghanistan. Afghanistan holds the Muslim religion. It is aparently against the law to dance.

      Afghanistan Star is an American Idol type of show but for thier country. This documentary shows Their culture very well and shows how strict their rules are. They made wonderful proformances in this documentary.

      I did not think so highly of this movie so I am not going to rate it. If you are interested in the Afghan culture feel free to watch the documentary.

{Please Vote For Me}

A Movie that takes place in China. They start to vote on who is class monitor, being a Communist country this is very new for them. The kids go through much lying and other dirty tactics to gain the classes vote.

This was so far my favorite out of the ones we watched it was funny and entertaining to watch. Honestly China doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. I sort of felt bad for the other two kids crying at the end. I found it very amusing on how far they went to try to make each other look bad. The movie was filmed very well and it was very good for a documentary.

China is very different from the U.S and i found it entertaining watching kids there in third grade and compare it to our third grade. I am going to be honest the kid's vocabulary is a lot more broad then our third grade. They even seem less lazy, over all the class system is better minus the physical abuse. I give this movie a 8 and a half / 10.

{Mongolian Ping Pong}

      The main characters name is Bilike he lives in a house in the middle of no where without running water or electricity. Being stuck in a place like that he didn't know much. He did not know what a ping pong ball was. his best friends Erguotou and Dawa and him found the "strange" ball floating down a river which let to curiosity for the kids. Bilike's grandma said it was a pearl from heaven. but It didn't stop them from innocent mischief for figuring out about the world around then.

      The movie was Filmed wonderfully. The main characters were three 7 year old boys which acted very well for their age. The landscape of where the movie was filmed was breath taking. I found it awesome that  the kids got to ride mini motorcycles and horses. This movie was more entertaining then the first but the ending was kind of...bad.

      You shouldn't end the way the movie ended it was completely random. They should have done a better job on that. But other then that they did a nice job. I recommend this movie to you if you like mongolian movies if i were to rate it i would give it a 7/10 rating.

{Weeping Camel}

      In Gobi which is South of Mongolia their is a family of shepherds. These shepherds assist camels with birth. One of their camels however starts to have huge difficulty delivering. With the help of the family a miracle happens and the camel gives birth to a rare white colored calf. unfortunately after all that effort the mother camel rejects it and doesn't give it any milk. The rejected baby calf now must find food else where and survive on its own. in accordance to a musician rising from a town being the calf's last hope.

      The movie was filmed in Mongolia and was filmed wonderfully. Their life style was very interesting, they were spiritual people that prayed to the spirits by sacrificing food to them. I think they would be considered a less developed country considering they barley had any of the technology the U.S has. But their families seem to be a lot closer then ours, they are even close to the other people around them.

      They portrayed the Camel's sorrow very well. The musician and the mom played a beautiful song in the movie and preformed it wonderfully. This movie was not exactly for my kind of taste but I still think they did a nice job. The camera control was handled very well and all the actors played their roles very well. To rate fairly I would give this movie a good score of 8/10 I recommend this movie for people who love to learn about other peoples culture.
